Ever feel like you have nothing to offer in life? This morning was a perfect example for me. I lost my keys, forgot to turn on the coffee for my husband, realized I didn’t pay a bill and – to add to the joy – woke up to a kitchen filled with dirty dishes and a bedroom that needed a visit from the HAZMAT team (all before 6:00 AM ).
My husband, on the other hand never, I mean ever has mornings like that. He is often the picture of perfection – always organized and 15 minutes early everywhere. He never forgets anything important and keeps everything clean. You can imagine the fights discussions we can get into! (I really do feel sorry for him sometimes!)
Ultimately, when I forget something or mess up I’m usually left feeling depressed. I’m thankful for my husband’s gifts and I love that part of him, but I often feel like I don’t measure up or have anything to offer in our marriage or in life.
About 6 months ago I went to a health and wellness training at my local gym and took a free character survey. It opened my eyes to qualities I didn’t realize were gifts - things like gratitude, kindness, fairness and loyalty. Sure, I really want to improve in the areas of life that don’t come natural to me – like being timely and organized, but it is important to realize that I too (and you!) have gifts! God calls us fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139: 13-14).
I recommend that if you ever struggle with a sense of worth or have trouble knowing what your strengths are, take this survey. (I am not affiliated with this in any way. You do have to register but I’ve never received any spam or anything else from them other than the results.)
Do you struggle with your sense of self-worth?
