Yep, we are a little redneck around here. The local combine demolition derby – held during the county fair – has been the highlight of our summer for the past 2 years. 2010 was our first year entering the derby and unfortunately the whole deal ended for us about 30 seconds after it started, thanks to a broken axle. See part one of the story. But his year was a a lot different.
Since the guys’ (my husband and 2 neighbors) combine wasn’t hardly scratched from last year, they didn’t have to spend much time getting it ready, which was good and bad. I missed the community suppers and late night visits with the girls that we had last year, but the boys each had an extra-busy summer so they were thankful that the machine didn’t need much more than a few extra pieces of metal welded on here and there.
They day of the derby was perfect and it really turned into an all-around perfect night (except for the fact that none of my family could make it up to watch like they did last year.) Thanks to some clouds the weather was in the high 80′s instead of the 100′s.
The night started by the guys taking the People’s Choice Award – won by the combine that received the most cheers.
This year we had cowbells and must have screamed louder than we did before!
Our neighbor made shirts with a pic of the guys’ combine on them!
The first round of the derby went fairly smooth, except one hang up with another combine for a minute or so.
But the boys made it to the final…. and won!
