Book Review – “All Things New” by Lynn Austin

StarStarStarStar out of 5

All Things New is the first book that I’ve read by Lynn Austin. I enjoyed the story– (and lost some sleep staying up late reading it) – I only wish I would have known about Austin’s writing sooner! I plan on reading more of her books in the near future.

“All Things New” is set in Virginia in the 1860s just after the Civil War ended. The story is told from the point of view of the opinionated, headstrong and plain-looking twenty-two-year-old Josephine.  Josephine grew up as a wealthy social elite – her parents owned a big plantation and numerous slaves. But the war stripped her family of most of their money, possessions and slaves. It also took the lives of her beloved father and brother. Worst of all, Josephine lost her faith in God and belief in prayer during the war.

Josephine is a strong-willed heroine not afraid to battle the social elitism and the racism in her culture. In a lot of ways, Josephine is a typical, predictable strong heroine. In fact, she reminds me a lot of Skeeter from the book “The Help”.

Despite some predictability, the book kept me entertained and, like any good Christian book, challenged my faith. Austin tackled some tough issues in the book – things like racism, rape, forgiveness, and bitterness,

The book is a little long – just over 400 pages, but it is worth the read. If you like historical Christian fiction, this novel should be on your to read list!
