Earning Extra Income in 2012

One of my biggest goals for 2012 is to earn some extra money. I love being a mom to my kids while my husband works a full-time job, but I’m always looking for ways to make some money to help out. As you know, whether you are trying to pay off debt, save for a ranch, give to needy children or pursue another dream, having a little extra income can make a big difference.

Though none of these tips are rocket science, and you’ve probably heard them all before, hopefully they will get you thinking about potential income-earning possibilities in your own life.

Save Money

Like I mentioned last month, saving money can be like earning money if you save on products you are already buying. Some people are just really good at budgeting and saving. For the last few years my sister Becki and her husband Kurt have operated on a strict cash budget. They account for every dollar they make. If they don’t have the money in their budget they don’t buy it. Their grocery budget is shockingly low (I’m amazed at how they do it), but they’ve learned how to get good deals at their local stores. They’ve listened to cds, watched videos and done research on budgeting and today they are reaping the benefits of their saving skills. They are about to have their first baby and reached their goal of having no consumer debt.

Good Old Ebay and Craigslist

Both Ebay.com and Craigslist.com have been around for years now and are still great places to sell extra stuff. I’ve sold odds and ends on both sites. My friend Marlene has an eye for deals and has made a business of buying cheap items at yard sales and reselling them on ebay.

Sell Your Craft

If I had any kind of craft skills I would be taking advantage of all of the opportunities to sell crafty items. Unfortunately, my craftiness consists of 4 unfinished quilts in my basement and several books full of marginal scrapbook pages, so I have to sit this idea out. But, if you have craft or art skills of any kind this is one of the best ways around to make extra cash.

My sister has a knack for making beaded jewelry. She sells it from her purse at the school where she works and lists it on her free Facebook page. My friend Leah watched an Internet video about making hair bows last year, realized she had the talent for it, and now she can hardly keep up with orders from all over the country. She sells at crafts shows and on the website etsy.com. Etsy is a great site for crafters to list homemade products of all kinds. Like Ebay, the site takes a small commission from every sale in exchange for showcasing products to thousands of potential customers. It’s is definitely a site worth looking into if you make any kind of homemade product.

Start a Blog or Website

I think that setting up a blog or website is one of the best ways to make a little extra money these days. It takes a lot of work, but it can reap great rewards. (Just don’t be like me and think that because you designed a web site using FrontPage once when you were a freshman in college that you are an awesome web designer).

I started my blog about 9 months ago. Though I haven’t earned much money with it yet, I know that there is potential. Did you know that every time you click on an advertisement on a webpage that site makes money? It may be a few cents here and there, but it can sure add up. I’ve learned that someone somewhere is making money from almost everything you and I do online – things like making searching and printing off coupons are making bloggers money.

Affiliate programs are my favorite way to make money on the web. Popular stores like Amazon.com, Cabela’s, Shutterfly.com and hundreds of others offer a chance to be an affiliate. If just you sign up for their free affiliate program and put an ad on your site. Anytime someone clicks on your site’s ad and buys a product you get a percentage of the purchase. Amazon.com offers one of the best affiliate programs around. They kick back 4% to 6% of each purchase made on their site. Last year I had my friends and family go through my Amazon link when they needed to purchase something there and I got 6% cash on everything they bought. So even if you just have a bunch of friends or a large, internet-savvy family, setting up a webpage can be a great way to earn some cash.

There are dozens of ways to make money from a blog or website and it t is truly worth looking into, even if you aren’t that great at online stuff. The costs of running a site should be factored into the money-making equation of course (my blog cost about $10 for the domain name and $8 a month to host on wordpress.org) but the earning potential is there. Plus, if you are a poor web designer like I am, there are lots of free site templates out there that offer easy customization to use to get you started.

Saving Money Online in 2012

There’s nothing like the week after Christmas to get me started thinking about my goals for the new year. One of my biggest goals for 2012 is to pay off debt and save money toward my family’s ranching goal. I’m not a natural saver, but I found some helpful online tools this year and plan on using them even more in 2012. These easy tips won’t likely save you thousands, but even a few dollars here and there really add up!

Search online through Swagbucks

Swagbucks.com is an online search engine like Google or Yahoo, except that when you search through the site online you randomly earn points called Swagbucks. The site is free (and very reputable – almost all bloggers and deal seekers online use it) and easy to use and the points can be redeemed for gift cards, electronics and thousands of other things. I found that the best value for the points in the $5 Amazon.com gift card. Just by searching online like I normally do, I earn $5 to spend at Amazon once every month or month and a half. The site has dozens of other ways to earn points faster. Doing surveys, inviting friends, taking the daily poll and watching videos all help you earn more points. I know several people who paid for most of their Christmas gifts with Amazon gift cards from Swagbucks.

Use cash back sites

Whenever I make a purchase online I always check out Ebates.com and Shopathome.com to see how much cash back they are giving (and go with the site that’s giving the most that day). Almost all stores are part of these sites and give 3 % to over 20% back on purchases. To earn money through Shop at Home and Ebates, just sign up on their home page and then click through their site to go to the store you want to purchase from. The only downfall is that you have to wait 60-90 days to get your cash back check or PayPal deposit. But, hey, it’s like free money and it doesn’t cost you a thing to do it!

Shop with gift cards

Almost all Kroger grocery stores (like King Soopers or Dillons) sell gift cards to dozens of popular stores and give you points for money off fuel when you purchase them. Whenever I know I am going to make a purchase in a store, I buy a gift card or two to pay for it. For instance, I bought a $50 Cabela’s gift card for a Christmas present and earned 4 times the value in points on the purchase (the stores often have different promotions on gift card point values). So I earned 200 points, which equaled $0.20 off per gallon of fuel in a single purchase. So again, not a lot of savings, but a few dollars for a few extra minutes of effort is worth it to me.

Use financial software

There are many free financial software sites online. Keeping track of your finances helps you avoid costly mistakes and extra charges. One site I really like is Mint.com. The secure site is free to use (the ads are a bit annoying sometimes) and provides a snapshot of all your accounts in one spot. You can see your bank accounts, loans, and credit cards all at once. The site provides budgeting tools too and customizable email alerts about your accounts. My parents pay for software called Quicken ($60-$70 a year) and really like it – especially how easy it makes sorting their deductions for taxes.

Make a Menu Plan

I waste more money on groceries than on anything else I think! When I stick with a menu plan I know that I keep my costs much lower. Menu planning is often an inconvenience for my spontaneous mind, but it is truly worth the effort for you if you want (or need) to save money.

The thing that helped my planning most was making a list of all of the dishes my family likes for each meal. That reference has made planning my meals go much more quickly! Also, for inspiration, every Monday the website Orgjunkie.com hosts a list of hundreds of menu plans from bloggers all over the web.

Check out deal blogs

In 2011 I saved the most money by following the tips on money saving blogs. There are thousands of websites online that provide links to get free products and coupon matchups for local and national stores. For instance, by combining coupons with sales, I think I got enough free toothpaste to last the whole year! Some sites I like are The Thrifty Couple, Money Saving Mom, Mojo Savings and Motherhood on a Dime. Do an online search and you will find more deal sites than you can possibly look at it! These sites really take the effort out of finding good deals for products you need.

When trying to find deals don’t forget about the opportunity cost of your time. It’s not worth 2 hours of your time to save $0.50. (Don’t ask me how I know.) And, of course, it isn’t a good deal if you don’t really need it! Remember that ultimately, saving money is just a way to keep more of the money you earn and helping you get closer to your goal. Next week I’ll give you a few tips on earning more money in 2012.
